Switzerland excels especially in the innovation output part of the study, leading in knowledge and technology output and ranking second behind Iceland in creative output. But the country offers also a great innovation input environment with a strong performance in market and business sophistication. Its high Innovation Efficiency Ratio (6th highest of all economies in the index, and 1st among the GII top 10) allows Switzerland to translate its robust innovation capabilities into high-level innovation outputs.
European countries continue to dominate the Global Innovation Index with the first Non-European country being the United States of America on sixth, followed by Singapore on seventh and Hong Kong on tenth rank. The top 10 is completed by Finland (4th), the Netherlands (5th), Denmark (8th), and Luxembourg (9th).
The GII is co-published by Cornell University, INSEAD, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and ranks 143 economies around the world according to their capacity for innovation and the innovation performance.
