Washington D.C. - Switzerland is ranked in first place in the 2026 Best Countries Rankings compiled by U.S. News & World Report. Out of the 100 countries evaluated, Switzerland occupies one of the top two spots in half of the eight categories. Europe dominates the rankings, while the USA languishes down in 18th place.

(CONNECT) In the overall rankings of US News’ 2026 Best Countries Rankings, Switzerland has claimed top spot. In this context, it performed excellently in five categories: Economic Development (1st place), Governance (1st), Opportunity (2nd), Culture & Tourism (2nd) and Health (4th). Switzerland still managed to achieve decent results in the categories of Infrastructure (15th), Natural Environment (19th) and Civic Health (15th).

In addition to these eight main categories, the 100 countries were evaluated in a further 24 subcategories. Taken together, these are intended to reflect a country’s performance, primarily in terms of prosperity, operational efficiency and societal well-being.

According to a statement issued by the news platform covering its rankings, Switzerland stands out for its continued strength in economic, institutional and social measures. In an article, U.S. News writes: “It’s a nation that truly works as good as it looks. Switzerland blends its stunning natural setting with world-leading economic and political stability”.

Europe dominates the overall rankings, providing 18 countries in the Top 25. After Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands are ranked from second place to fifth. Norway, the UK, Finland, Luxembourg and Austria complete the Top 10.

The USA is ranked in 18th place. According to the report, this illustrates the discrepancy between economic strength and general quality of life: High rankings in the categories of Economic development (2nd) and Culture & Tourism (1st) are offset by lower rankings for Health (33rd), Infrastructure (39th) and Civic Health (41st).

According to the authors of the report, such stark contrasts, even between main and subcategories, emphasize the compromises that countries accept in their pursuit of growth and prosperity: For example, Singapore ranks in first place for Infrastructure, but languishes down in 96th place for Natural Environment; Oman's ranking of 2nd place for Public Safety contrasts with 99th for Human Rights and Freedoms; and Italy ranks 6th for Culture & Tourism but only 41st for Opportunity. ce/mm
