Switzerland plans AI summit in Geneva in 2027

The Swiss federal government would like Switzerland to host an artificial intelligence (AI) summit in 2027 and has commissioned the necessary preparations. With this summit, the country wants to position itself as a dynamic research and innovation hub. One focus will be on human rights and fundamental rights.
Switzerland wants to make a constructive contribution to the ongoing debate around AI use and its international governance and regulation. According to the Swiss government, the Federal Council, organizing an AI summit would be one part of achieving this. At its meeting on 25 June 2025, the Federal Council decided that this summit will be held in Geneva in 2027, according to a statement.
The Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications, and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, have been tasked with making the necessary preparations. Academic and economic stakeholders are also to be involved.
The Federal Council believes that organizing an AI summit will enable Switzerland to make a constructive contribution to the ongoing debate around the use of AI and its international governance and regulation. At the same time, it will allow the country to position itself “as a strong and dynamic research and innovation hub”. The Federal Council also plans to highlight the importance of international law and fundamental rights in the development and use of AI.
To date, there have been three AI summits: in 2023 in Bletchley Park in the UK, in 2024 in the South Korean capital Seoul, and in 2025 in Paris. India will host the next summit in early 2026. Switzerland intends to work closely with India in preparing for the Geneva summit.
