Opportunities for Swiss companies: the Ireland Report on the Infrastructure Sector

In 2018 the Irish government announced a €116 billion investment in infrastructure until 2027 (The National Development Plan). The plan prioritizes energy and climate change projects, as well as housing, roads, and railway construction, and water system improvements. The scale and importance of this project opens up great opportunities for Swiss exporters wishing to take their technologies and solutions to Ireland.

Infrastructure

The Covid-19 pandemic has certainly shifted the country’s priorities, yet two main rail projects are still planned to go ahead despite the economic recession, as they are key to Ireland’s economic growth. These are the Dart extension and the MetroLink project. Ireland’s housing challenge will also remain an ongoing investment and so is the outdated Irish water infrastructure. This means that despite the implications of the pandemic, opportunities are continuing to arise, so it is a good moment for Swiss companies to pilot solutions and initiate collaborations. Change is needed and challenges are present, which means the sector is open and certainly appreciative of innovative solutions.

This report, written by OpenVentures Consulting, and commissioned by the Swiss Business Hub UK + Ireland, paints a picture of the Irish infrastructure system by looking at needs and trends for the sector, ultimately identifying business opportunities for Swiss companies in the Irish market.

The 2020 Ireland Study covers the following topics:

  • Sector overview
  • The National Development Plan
  • Spending
  • Procurement and subcontracting
  • Current projects and opportunities
  • The impact of Covid-19
  • Adoption of innovation
