Migros and Schindler test LOXO’s self-driving delivery vehicles

Migros and Schindler are testing self-driving delivery vehicles created by the Bern startup LOXO. The Migronomous delivery service will bring groceries from a Migros shop to the Schindler headquarters in Ebikon in the canton of Lucerne.

The supermarket chain Migros, lift manufacturer Schindler and the Bern startup LOXO are joining forces to trial run an innovative delivery service. Starting on 8 February, a self-driving delivery vehicle built by LOXO will bring products from the local Migros shop to employees at the Schindler headquarters in Ebikon. For the Migronomous delivery service, the LOXO Alpha vehicle automatically drives the 500 meters between shop and Campus at a maximum speed of 30 km/h.

In the pilot project, the vehicle will gradually become more and more independent until it is fully automated in the last project phase, as Migros and Schindler explained in a joint press release

“We are very much interested in combining vertical mobility with innovative, automotive transport options,” explains Christian Studer, Head of New Technologies at Schindler. “Connected transport solutions can make cities more livable and sustainable as well as significantly contributing to decarbonization.” For Rainer Deutschmann, Head of the Safety and Traffic Directorate at Migros-Genossenschaftsbund, a self-driving delivery service fits to the company’s pioneering spirit: “We can certainly imagine that the self-driving delivery service could be an addition to our existing transport fleet in the future”.

LOXO first unveiled its autonomous vehicle solution for last-mile delivery to the public in December 2022. It is reportedly the first fully automated self-driving delivery vehicle on Swiss roads and can transport up to 64 shopping bags.
