Qaptis’ mobile CO2 capture device revolutionizes heavy transport decarbonization

Qaptis aims to bridge the gap to achieving Net-Zero emissions in heavy transport by developing a groundbreaking device capable of capturing up to 90% of a vehicle's CO2 emissions. The Valais-based start-up closed its pre-seed round in the amount of CHF 1.3 million.

Today, heavy-duty transport contributes to over 10% of the EU’s yearly greenhouse gas emissions. However, the implementation of low-carbon options such as hydrogen and electric vehicles is hindered by the requirement for a complete overhaul of existing infrastructure and fleets, which can take several decades. Valais-based start-up Qaptis aims to bridge the gap between the global goal of achieving Net-Zero emissions by 2050 for heavy transport and our current industrial and infrastructural capabilities to make it possible.

Created in July 2021 and born out of the Laboratory of Industrial Process and Energy Systems Engineering (IPESE) at the EPFL Valais Wallis campus in Sion, Qaptis is developing a groundbreaking device capable of capturing up to 90% of a vehicle’s CO2 emissions. The device can be retrofitted onto existing internal combustion engines and uses waste heat from the exhaust to capture CO2.

This solution offers an immediate response to global emissions challenges without requiring fleet renewal or infrastructure changes. With low initial costs, individual transporters can take charge of decarbonization. The Qaptis capture device has received recognition from significant industry players in addition to investors, demonstrating its potential.

Validating the technology and expanding the team

After receiving a Tech Seed Loan from the FIT, Qaptis has successfully closed its pre-seed round in the amount of CHF 1.3 million with the participation of best-in-class investors including commodities giant Cargill, BlackWood and YB Startup.

« We are thrilled and honored that top strategic investors and first clients are sharing our vision. Our carbon capture solution is an exciting promise to the market that needs to turn decarbonization ambitions into concrete actions. » Theodore Caby, Co-Founder & CEO, Qaptis

« Qaptis’ cutting-edge technology could provide the most pragmatic solution to allow for energy transition in road delivery and beyond. We are delighted to support the Team on their road to decarbonization. » Bastian Larsen, Founder and CEO of BlackWood
