Established in 1961, the International School of Berne (ISBerne) moved to its new campus in Gümligen, Siloah, in April 2017. At the new location, around 350 students from 45 countries aged between 3 and 19 follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, benefitting from an outstanding learning environment. The campus offers state-of-the-art science labs, a robust IT infrastructure, a big gymnasium, a well-stocked library and top-notch recreation areas and sports fields. Social activities like music, theater and sports are permanent fixtures on the school timetable.

Achieving a healthy work-life balance

According to ISBerne director Richard Swart, the canton of Bern is a very welcoming location for expatriate families. “Bern is simply the most beautiful region I have ever lived in,” he says. “When recruiting teaching staff to ISBerne, I can speak honestly of a region that is welcoming to other cultures, where individuals are friendly and language is not a barrier”. What Mr. Swart particularly appreciates about Bern is that it offers an environment in which work, family and recreation can be balanced in perfect harmony. “A healthy, active lifestyle and an outdoor life surrounded by nature are rated very highly in Switzerland. In a world that is, I think, struggling to find a good work-life balance, these factors are becoming ever more important,” he explains.
