European universities are catching up with their American counterparts in terms of spin-off company numbers, writes the “Wall Street Journal” in an article. Institutions across Europe are establishing tech-transfer offices and encouraging students to start businesses.

A European university is now top of the list for the number of spin-offs in recent years – the ETH. Since 2007, the university has spun out at least 20 companies every year, writes the “Wall Street Journal” based on findings from university spin-offs specialist Global University Venturing. In May 2019, Global University Venturing named ETH transfer the Tech Transfer Unit of the Year.

The article goes on to highlight that European spin-offs are increasingly growing into big companies. It cites as an example GetYourGuide – the ETH spin-off that offers tours and activities in travel destinations has already raised 484 million dollars in funding.
