The technology group Bühler has launched a programme that will sustain the competitiveness of its Swiss locations. In a first step, it will modernise production conditions in Uzwil.

Bühler wants to modernise production conditions in Uzwil.

Production and logistics, innovation, research and training – these are the focus of the new modernisation programme launched by Bühler, which will run for the next five years. After focusing on international growth over the past years, it is now “Switzerland’s turn again”, said CEO Stefan Scheiber in a statement.

“We want to establish a best-in-class manufacturing system in Uzwil,” explained Scheiber. Several old buildings in Uzwil will be torn down in order to streamline the flow of incoming and outgoing materials.

“We will develop Uzwil into a globally leading manufacturing site where we will apply amongst others also Industry 4.0 principles and manufacture technical core components of our plants with top efficiency and highest quality,” said Holger Feldhege, head of manufacturing in Uzwil.

Bühler is also investing in its location in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden by modernising mechanical sheet metal and plate working and installing new production equipment to make it more competitive in the manufacture of special-purpose products. Uzwil in contrast specialises in large production volumes.

“Switzerland has a future for manufacturing industrial goods,” said Scheiber. “With this first modernisation step and the related rebuilds, we want to seize opportunities presented by globalisation and technological developments.”
