Shanghai Ranking counts ETH among 20 best universities

The recently published 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities from the independent Shanghai Ranking Consultancy has placed the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) at number 20. The University of Geneva has significantly improved to 49th place.

The 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities places the ETH in 20 ­– the same as the previous year. Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, which is independent of politics and academia, assesses more than 2,500 universities each year and publishes a list of the top 1,000. The criteria include the number of frequently cited researchers and published articles as well as the per capita performance of a university.

The top three universities are from North America: Harvard University, Stanford University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). A total of 15 universities out of the top 20 are from the USA. The University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford came in fourth and seventh place respectively, with Paris-Saclay University in 15th and University College London in 17th.

The ETH in 20th place features in the top ten in the world for eight subjects: civil engineering and water resources in 2nd place, environmental science & engineering in 3rd place, automation & control in 4th place, computer science & engineering in 7th place, mathematics and earth sciences in 8th place, and chemistry in 10th place.

This year, the University of Geneva is the second-best university in Switzerland. It has climbed from 62nd last year to 49th place this year. Its highest-ranked subjects are physics (19), dentistry and oral sciences (30), and mathematics (51-75). Out of the Swiss universities, the Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne made the biggest gains, leaping from 101-150th place last year to 54th this year. Its courses for energy science & engineering came fourth in a global comparison. Overall, seven of the university’s study areas are located from 22nd to 39th place.

The University of Zurich remained in 59th place, followed by the University of Basel, which rose from 83rd to 81st. The University of Bern and the University of Lausanne remained in the range of 101-150th place and the Università della Svizzera italiana and the University of Fribourg remained in the range between 501 and 600th place.
