CKW Fiber Services, a subsidiary of the CKW Group, has built a new data center by the name of DC Zug on the site of the CKW Rotkreuz substation in the canton of Zug. According to the company, the new data center offers 700 square meters of space for various expansion stages such as rack spaces, private caged areas and white spaces. Located in Central Switzerland, the range of services offered by the data center is also appealing to national companies from other regions that are on the hunt for a second location for data housing, storage and archiving on security grounds.

According to a press release, the new center should not only set standards in terms of data security, but also in terms of sustainability. “The CKW Group is one of the leading providers of solar power systems in Switzerland, so of course we also rely on renewable electricity production for our own projects”, comments Roberto Cresta, CEO at CKW Fiber Services. Solar modules are installed on both the roof and the façade. The solar power system, which covers a total area of 1,165 square meters, produces around 135,000 kilowatt hours of electrical energy per year overall. In addition, the reuse of waste heat and an expanded free-cooling system guarantee greater efficiency even with a greater data processing load. This is supported above all by the integrated high-performance fiber optic network. Of the total investment of 10 million Swiss francs that CKW has put towards the new building, expanding the fiber optic network alone accounted for a sum of 1.6 million Swiss francs.

The sophisticated safety features of the new data center also include the use of earthquake-proof technology in accordance with building class 3 in addition to energy autonomy of six days in the event of a crisis.
