Exploring Kenya's Cleantech Landscape: Opportunities for Swiss Companies

Kenya's commitment to 100% clean energy by 2030 and its robust cleantech sector offer a wealth of opportunities for Swiss companies. The Swiss Business Hub Southern Africa recently published the report "Kenya's Cleantech Landscape", which provides an in-depth analysis of this rapidly growing market, covering topics such as renewable energy, waste management, electric mobility and on the many opportunities in Kenya's thriving cleantech sector.

In a recent fact-finding mission led by State Secretary for Economic Affairs Helene Budliger Artieda, the Swiss Business Hub Southern Africa helped Swiss companies ABB and TBF + Partner explore the Kenyan market, identify opportunities and connect with potential partners. The mission was part of a broader effort to strengthen economic ties between Switzerland and East Africa.

The Swiss Business Hub planned two dedicated cleantech breakout sessions, a cleantech roundtable with Swiss and Kenyan private sector representatives, and B2B meetings that facilitated direct connections between Swiss and Kenyan companies. These events successfully laid the groundwork for cooperation on sustainable development and the introduction of clean technologies in the region. Highlighting the regional dynamics in East Africa, Tanzania’s rapid urban development with Dar es Salaam as a city approaching 10 million inhabitants (more than double the size of Nairobi) will stimulate a number of important cleantech projects.

Testimonials from ABB and TBF + Partner showcase the mission's success:

ABB
Edith Kikonyogo
Cluster Manager – Energy Industries, ABB Southern Africa:

“The CleanTech mission to Kenya as part of the Swiss business delegation was of great value to ABB (SA Pty Ltd). The B2B meetings arranged for us were a clear reflection of good organisation and strategic planning ahead of the event. We are pursuing solid business opportunities with three companies in Kenya following on from these meetings. The official meetings with the ministries also gave valuable insights on business outlook in Kenya and East Africa in general, insights that were important for decision-making on our strategy in the region.”

TBF + Partner AG
Kilian Carrarini
Member of Management Board, Business Consultant:

“The Cleantech conference in Nairobi, very professionally organized and hosted, connected open-minded, curious and positive interested parties together and created future valuable links between Government entities and businesses. It very well increased our own visibility for our core competence waste-to-energy, which links waste management challenges with energy production solutions to capture all the energy content in vast landfills.”

Kenya's cleantech opportunities span from renewable energy, waste management, and more. Swiss companies can capitalize on Kenya's strategic location, developed infrastructure, and a strong talent pool to create innovative business models and new markets for cleantech solutions.
