Megasol Energie AG: Fast international growth

Megasol entered the international market in 2012, and now already generates 85% of its sales outside Switzerland. The goal is to continue doubling the export share of sales every year.

Megasol Energie AG

Megasol is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of solar modules and intelligent mounting systems, offering sound advice and smart complete solutions from a single source. Founded in 1993, Switzerland’s largest solar manufacturer has been shaping the Swiss and international markets for decades. The photovoltaic solar modules and components are developed and manufactured at the Deitingen (Solothurn) production site with 155 employees. The company is particularly successful in the fast-growing segment of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). Megasol has also developed into an innovative leader in an extremely dynamic industry through active research and development activities.

Fast international growth
Since entering the German market in 2012, Megasol has experienced rapid international growth. Since 2019, the company has been present in Italy as well and is supported by S-GE in dealing with processing arrangements. Italy accounts for the largest share of sales in total exports, at 36%. In 2021, the company entered the market in the Netherlands and Norway, and in 2022 in Sweden, where S-GE supported Megasol in issues related to customs clearance. At the moment, the focus of internationalisation is on Belgium, Luxembourg and Denmark. Overall, the export share is already 85%; the target is over 90%. To date, the hidden champion from Deitingen has implemented over 100,000 projects in more than 30 countries.

Consistent alignment of supply with demand
Specialising in customised mass production of building-integrated photovoltaics, Megasol is the only manufacturer in the world that can supply any panel in all sizes, shapes, colours, glass surfaces and structures. These are used for façades and roof tile alternatives. They are of the highest performance and are extremely popular with star architects such as Herzog & de Meuron, Shigeru Ban and others. Thanks to its highly industrialised production facilities in Switzerland and China, Megasol can offer competitive prices and the best delivery times on the market. Megasol consistently aligns its product range with demand, even beyond the obvious energy-related functionalities, and optimally integrates its shareholders into the international value chain.

Market development with various partners
“The main focuses of our internationalisation strategy are standardised sales processes, smart complete solutions and the scalability of our sales system,” says Markus Gisler, CEO and founder. For its business activities in the key markets, Megasol was able to win several resellers as regional distribution partners right from the start. For market expansion with complete photovoltaic systems, the niche player relied on a few country partners with specialised installation skills and good market knowledge. Megasol was able to gain further market share for high-quality building-integrated photovoltaic systems by tackling complete construction projects and working with international architects. In addition, the company has exclusive distribution rights for certain product lines and countries. In 2022, Megasol also entered into a global distribution partnership with Saint-Gobain, the world’s largest manufacturer of building materials.
